Booktok

By now, many ORHS students are well aware of the popular social media app, Tiktok. Within this app, there are several communities, one of which is referred to as “Booktok”.

On Booktok, people across the globe can bond over their mutual love for reading. Barnes & Nobles even created a section filled with Booktok’s favorites. Titles such as People we Meet on Vacation, The Song of Achilles, The Invisible Life of Addie Larue, and many more can be found on these shelves. Genres including mystery, romance, young adult, and fantasy are highly prominent on Booktok.

Fantasy, especially, has been favored with Shadow and Bone falling under the category. Shadow and Bone have had over three million copies sold in the English language alone, not to mention being translated into thirty-eight languages; (https://screenrant.com/shadow-bone-books-beginners-guide-where-start/). Netflix has also recently released a new series based on the book. The Booktok community is largely to blame for this rush of fame.

Booktok has created a sense of family for many. Numerous amount of creators have been given the platform to create content on something they are passionate about. Viewers are able to get inspired to read and share their opinions on their most recently read books. One creator, @kateslibrary, has obtained 227,100 followers solely from her popularity on Booktok. Her videos, like many other Booktok creators, are based on her favorite characters, books she has read that month, what she plans on reading next, recommendations, and much more book-related content.

Booktok is a rapidly growing subdivision of Tiktok that is of much importance to many Oak Ridge students. It encourages teenagers and young adults to read, write, and review books of all genres and styles.
