Sports and School

On April 12th, 2021, all ORHS students came back full time - except anyone who stayed distant learning instead of going to hybrid a while ago. With everyone back on campus, the bell schedule has changed a little bit, meaning sports’ times did too.

At first, the school schedule may seem very confusing but it is simple, really. School starts at 8:30 a.m. On Monday’s, there is no first period so you go straight to second. Each class period is 44 minutes long with a 10 minute passing period. Then you head straight to third period, which is followed by a 15 minute Nutritional Break. Students will continue to their 4th and 5th period class, before eating lunch at 12:01 p.m. Lunch lasts 30 minutes, leaving 6th and 7th period right after. Students will then get out at 2:10 p.m.

The Tuesday-Friday schedules are similar to each other, with the exception of the class periods. On Tuesday and Thursday, 1st period lasts 58 minutes. Then, students will head to 2nd period for 1 hour and 34 minutes. Next, there is a 15-minute nutritional break for students to refuel. 4th period is another hour and 34 minutes, which leads right into the 30 minute lunch. Ending the day, we have 6th period for the final hour and 34 minutes, letting us out of class at 3:05 p.m.

All of this is the same for Wednesday and Friday, but the period numbers change. So instead of 2nd period, you would go to 3rd. And instead of 4th period before lunch, you sit through 5th. After lunch, we end our days with 7th period instead of 6th, letting us out at 3:05 again.

While some people are happy, and some people are upset, all the athletes are wondering what this means for sports. Especially since indoor sports have opened up with testing weekly. With school ending later, sports practices and games start later as well. It is up to coaches as to when practices start, but all game times are located on the ORHS Athletics Homepage. While these past two school years haven’t gone entirely to plan, at least we are a step closer to the normalcy we all are excited to return to.
