The Impact of the “Devious Licks” TikTok

Since September, the Devious Licks trend has affected many schools across the country since the initial video, which was viewed 2.7 million times before being removed from TikTok. Multiple of the Oak Ridge bathrooms have been vandalized and stolen from, causing a few to close down. The small portion of our school’s population continuing this trend is making the rest of the Oak Ridge community pay for their behavior.

The vandalisms are wasting resources and time for both students and staff members. Due to the closures of the multi-purpose room bathrooms, some students have to walk across the campus to use the bathroom, wasting class time that could have been spent doing homework, taking notes, or completing a test. The janitors have spent hours restoring the bathrooms for the students to be able to use them again.

Unfortunately, the Devious Licks trend has plans to trash and graffiti the halls of schools, destroy school property, and more in upcoming months. Students have been warned that being caught doing any of these challenges will result in suspension and possible expulsion.

Why are students damaging the bathrooms, when it is used by students? “It seems senseless to me. The bathrooms are for the students, yet they're the ones damaging the bathrooms, and they are the ones who are paying for it” an Oak Ridge teacher stated, “I don’t understand why don’t people make doing something positive a trend for once, instead of something destructive.” The digital influences of other users of the app may interfere with the judgment of the students responsible for the vandalism. Even with the explosive trends of wreckage, some students have reported having seen doing kind acts becoming popular on TikTok, such as cleaning the bathrooms or refilling soap dispensers. Hopefully, the students of Oak Ridge can redeem themselves through good behavior and stopping the vandalism.
