Halloween is just around the corner! And what better to do than get some popcorn and some blankets and watch some good old flicks for spooky fun. In this list, I’ll be highlighting some classics and some lesser-known ones. Without further ado, let’s dig into it!

10. Crimson Peak (2015) — Netflix

Intended for mature audiences, Crimson Peak follows a young woman (Mia Wasikowska) as she is enamored with Sir Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston) and is whisked away to his secluded family mansion, which he shares with his sister (Jessica Chastain). The film is a mix of horror and thriller, and the cinematography is absolutely stunning. It’s currently available to stream on Netflix.

9. Hocus Pocus (1993)

For those of you with a taste for the classic “Happy Halloween” vibes, Hocus Pocus is an obvious choice. We follow three kids and a talking cat as they battle against the Sanderson sisters, witches resurrected from their deaths three centuries prior. This movie is totally family-friendly, and is available to stream on Disney+ right now!

8 The Fear Street Trilogy (2021) — Netflix

Based on the R. L. Stine’s series of novels of the same name, the Fear Street trilogy is about a group of ‘90s teenagers who struggle against an ancient curse in their hometown. This slasher, according to netflixlife.com, is intended for older teenagers and adults because of the ample gore throughout the franchise. All three movies are available to stream on Netflix.

7. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

This family-friendly classic, brought to you by Tim Burton, stars the voice of Danny Elfman as Jack Skellington, the ruler of Halloweentown who grows tired of his always-spooky life. There is some debate about whether this movie is a Halloween or Christmas movie, but it was released on October 13th, so it’s safe to say it’s acceptable for the spooky season. It’s available on Disney+ right now!

6. Corpse Bride (2005) — HBO Max

Another Tim Burton classic is Corpse Bride, starring Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. In this family-friendly film, a young man, Victor, finds himself in a tricky situation after meeting his betrothed of an arranged marriage. While he frets about his wedding, Victor accidentally triggers the reanimation of a corpse bride and is dragged into the realm of the afterlife. Watch this movie on HBO Max and enjoy its catchy tunes!

5. It (2017) — Hulu

Seven kids in Derry, Maine battle against an ancient being that terrorizes their town’s youth population every 27 years. This film is based off of the novel by Stephen King. The acting is phenomenal and the dialogue is funny. The scares are really frightening (especially if you hate clowns). It is available to stream on Hulu.

4. Coraline (2009)

This claymation film follows a young girl named Coraline, who, while exploring her new family home, discovers a portal to an alternate version of her own world. Though this is a family movie, some of the scenes are pretty spooky. Unfortunately, Coraline is not available on any streaming platforms, but is available to watch starting at $2.99 on YouTube!

3. Scream (1996)

As one of the top classic slasher films, Scream was obviously going to make the list. A masked maniac terrorizes the population of a small suburban town. According to IMDb Review, the film “reinvented and revitalized the slasher genre.” You can expect a lot of blood with this one! Right now, it’s available to stream with a SlingTV subscription.

2. The Shining (1980) — Amazon Prime Video

Another classic horror film based off of the novel by Stephen King, The Shining has both supernatural and slasher elements as a struggling writer Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) and his family care for a secluded hotel during the winter, only to be influenced by dark forces of the land. Things turn violent — some scenes definitely aren’t for the faint of heart! The Shining is available to stream on HBO Max.

1. The Conjuring (2013) — Netflix

And at the top of this list is The Conjuring, a classic horror film with demons and ghosts. Based off a real paranormal investigation, The Conjuring tells the story of a family as they move into a new home; they soon discover that they are not the only presence in the house and look to paranormal investigators Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) for help.
